Let's tell a story about racism but disguise by placing it on another planet. Star Trek = Sci Fi (at least in the first two series) - It asked the big questions.
Star Wars was set in medieval Japan, see Kurosawa's Hidden Fortress and see where Lucus got all his ideas from. Star Wars = Space Opera - You could tell the exact same story if you changed the setting to a fantasy world, the dark ages, or medieval Japan, uh. Space Opera is merely meant to entertain with technological/futuristic settings as window dressing. BINGO! Sci Fi asks questions and challenges the viewer to think about the stories and expand their own conciousness and world view.
